Eligibility (Retiree) - "Eligibility Rules" / Back

Retiree Eligibility Rules

You qualify for the Comprehensive Retiree Plan (CRP) if you meet all of the following eligibility rules:

  1. You are a pensioner with the Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Plan (or another plan approved by TBT) or a recipient of Social Security disability benefits.
  2. You were covered under TBT Plans I, III, IV, V, A, I-A, III-A, V-A, III-A-NEWS, V-A-NEWS or for at least 24 of the 36 months immediately before your date of retirement from active employment. (For purposes of this eligibility requirement, coverage under any predecessor fund which has merged with TBT, or a period of self-payment contributions under COBRA continuation coverage or any other TBT allowed self-pay provisions, may be used to meet all or part of the 24-month requirement.)
  3. You are not currently covered by or eligible for a group health plan for active employees.
  4. You make timely self-payment in the amount required by the Plan, as determined by the TBT Board of Trustees.
  5. You have no gap in coverage between eligibility as an active employee covered under a TBT Plan (see item 2 above) and eligibility as a retiree. (You must elect to participate when you first become eligible for TBT retiree benefits, unless you first elect COBRA continuation coverage. If you do not enroll when you first become eligible, except as noted under Disability exception at right, you will not be permitted to enroll at a future date.)
    DISABILITY EXCEPTION
If you retire due to disability, a gap in coverage will be waived as long as you apply for coverage in a timely manner after you receive notice of entitlement from Social Security or the Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Plan (or another TBT-approved plan).
  6. You submit an application for retiree benefits and a copy of your Social Security or pension certification to TBT.

REMINDER

All required self-payment contributions and enrollment forms (including HMO applications) must be received by the TBT Plan Administration Office before coverage begins. (See your Enrollment Materials folder and pages 3-7 of the Guide To Your Benefits.)

Dependent Coverage
Both you and your legal spouse are eligible to participate. The only person eligible for dependent coverage under the Plan is your legal spouse. Children are not eligible—even if they were covered as dependents when you or your spouse became eligible to enroll in the Plan.

Dependent Children
Dependent children are not eligible for coverage under this Plan. If you have children who were formerly covered as your dependents under TBT Plans I, III, IV, V, A, I-A, III-A, V-A, III-A-NEWS, V-A-NEWS contact the TBT Plan Administration Office for information about alternate coverage.

If your medical coverage was through an HMO, contact the HMO for information on converting your children’s coverage to an individual plan provided by the HMO. This plan may cost more and provide fewer benefits than group coverage.
